Hello there,

Welcome to Are you Ready to Learn Online?

This is an online book. You turn the pages by clicking on the arrow on the bottom right.

What do we mean by online learning?

Online learning is learning that uses the internet as a place to learn new information, do activities and talk about learning.

You are doing online learning right now.

2 There are different kinds of online learning

In some online learning programs, learners and instructors are in the same room at the same time. They do some activities online and some activities offline. This is blended learning.

Other programs are online only. Learners and instructors are never in the same room at the same time. This is distance learning.

What kind of online learning are you doing right now?

3 Distance learning can be done anywhere at anytime

You can work at your own pace whenever you have time.

You can work from anywhere you have a computer and internet access.

In some distance courses, the class meets at certain times in an online classroom called Centra or by video conference. You can talk to the instructor and the other learners.

In other courses, the class never meets a the same time. You communicate with the instructor and other learners by writing or recording messages.

What do you think? Do you think you will like this kind of learning?

We have several options and we will work with you to find the best one.

Click on the arrow to your right to go to the next page.

4 Distance learning is independent learning

Distance learning is similar to learning in a regular classroom.

You use the same skills but you may use them more independently.

When you need help, you can't always ask an instructor right away like you can in the classroom.

Some people like having the opportunity to work independently.

Other people prefer to learn with an instructor in the same room.

What is your preference? Or do you like both?

Click on the arrow to your right to go to the next page.

5 Distance learning is self-directed learning

Everybody does some informal self-directed learning. You do this when you need to learn something new at home or at work and there is nobody to teach you.

Self-directed learning skills help us to be lifelong learners.

If you want to be a self-directed distance learner, it helps if you have a strong commitment to learning and are pretty good at organizing your time and your work.

You will have an instructor to help you but you will decide when to do the work and how long to work on something.

You will be doing a lot of research and activities on your own.

Some people learn better without other people around them. They find it less distracting.

Some people find it difficult to stay focussed when they are trying to learn on their own.

What do you think? Do you like self-directed learning?
